LOOKING FOR A LUXONAUTE

The storyline captures some of the exercises and techniques which aspiring astronauts must master, e.g. skydiving, potholing, carrying out exercises underwater to simulate the weightless conditions of space.

Which child has never dreamed of going to the moon or discovering life on another planet? « Looking for a Luxonaute » is the title of an inspiring new comic-strip publication which demonstrates how such a dream can now become reality. It is commissioned by the Luxembourg Space Agency to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Luxembourg’s membership of ESA. The book relates the adventures of Renya from the virtual reality experiences of her youth of exploring Mars through to her studies to obtain a Master in space technologies and finally her successful participation in a competition to select Luxembourg’s first astronaut.

Although the plot is presented in comic-strip form and the characters take on animal features (Renya is a fox), the content is steeped in fact, e.g. the exploitation of space resources, in which Luxembourg has positioned itself as a world leader, and is set in a Luxembourgish context, e.g. Renya obtains her degree from the University of Luxembourg. Without always mentioning the companies by name, the book explains several groundbreaking technologies which have been developed in Luxembourg with a view to furthering space exploration and colonizing the moon and Mars.

When Renya is selected to take part in the competition to find the country’s first astronaut, the storyline captures some of the exercises and techniques which aspiring astronauts must master, e.g. skydiving, potholing, carrying out exercises underwater to imitate the conditions of weightlessness in space. At the same time as Reyna accomplishes her high-flying ambition – and in keeping with all comic-strip stories – there is a parallel intrigue which involves a dastardly rival and a faithful friend which sees good pitted against evil.

The book is published by LSA and is available in Luxembourgish and French in all good bookshops in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
